Biographical notes:

James Daugherty (1889-1974) was born in Asheville, North Carolina and attended the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. He also spent two years in London studying under Frank Brangwyn. He was originally a muralist and his work hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Smithsonian. He also worked on theater sets, illustrated fiction books, and became a children's book author and illustrator. He won the Newbery Medal in 1940 for his children's book, "Daniel Boone" and was a runner-up for two Caldecott Medals with "Andy and the Lion," 1939, and "Gillespie and the Guards, 1957."
