Son of John & Judith Burnett, born September 3, 1800 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia; removed to Kentucky and was admitted to bar in Paris, Kentucky; 1829, appointed sub-Indian agent at Prairie du Chien, hurt in a fire, and did not take office till June, 1830; removed during a reorganization of the Indian Dept., 1834; divorced his wife, Lucy; district attorney for Crawford, Iowa, Dubuque, and Des Mois counties, resigned, 1835 ; interested in Four Lakes Co., with S.T. Mason, J.D. Doty, and others, 1836; elected by was denied seat in Wisconsin Territorial Legislative Council; declined appointment as district attorney of Crawford County, Wisconsin; married Lucina Maria Brunson, Dec. 29, 1836; defeated for delegate to Congress by Doty; reporter of Wisconsin Territory Supreme Court, member of Wisconsin Territorial Assembly from Grant County, 1844-1846; died November 5, 1846.
