Hill joined the Duke University Chemistry Department in 1931 and remained there until his death in 1968. His specialty was high temperature and solid-state chemistry.

Douglas Greenwood Hill was born in 1905 in New York City. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1926 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1927 and 1929, respectively. He joined the Duke University Chemistry Department in 1931 and remained there until his death in 1968. His specialty was high temperature and solid-state chemistry. A memorial lecture in his name was started in 1972.
