English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford; on inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, he embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. Phillipps's collections eventually contained over 60,000 manuscripts. He printed a number of these at his Middle Hill Press. Phillipps had a keen interest in genealogy and copied and printed a number of works on heraldry and genealogy. The prolific seventeenth century English herald, Sir William Dugdale, was the author of the Visitations of Staffordshire and of Derbyshire, both printed by Phillipps at the Middle Hill Press in 1854. Dugdale's Baronage of English was first published in 1675.
