Pierian Club (Kansas City, Kan.)

Biographical notes:

The Pierian Club was organized in 1894 by Mrs. D.F. Rivers of Kansas City, Kansas. Named for the “Pierian spring” of Thomas Pope’s Essay on Criticism, the organization was one of the first African American literary clubs in the area. A club for women only, bimonthly meetings featured lectures, discussions of current events, and correspondence coursework; members also engaged in community service and participated in social events. The club remains active into the 21st century.
