Biographical notes:

The Dept. of Public Welfare opened Galesburg State Research Hospital (1949) to provide mental illness care and treatment, while serving as a center specializing in mental health research, particularly as it relates to the aging process. When the Dept. of Public Welfare was abolished (1961), Galesburg State Research Hospital was administered by the new Dept. of Mental Health. The hospital began participation in a departmental psychiatric nursing affiliation program (1964), which provided instruction to students from other general hospital nursing schools. In 1975 the institution was renamed Galesburg Mental Health Center.
