W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris, grew up in England, and educated at King's School, Canterbury and Heidelberg University. When he returned to England he studied medicine and was certified in 1897, but abandoned it after the success of his first novels and plays. By 1915 he was an established writer of plays, short stories and novels. Maugham was a frequent traveller, and places he visited were often reflected in his works. Several of his stories and plays later were used in movies.

Somerset Maugham--British novelist, short-story writer and playwright--was born in Paris and educated in England. On completing his medical internship, Maugham travelled in Europe and then settled in Paris. Maugham has written many novels, short stories and plays. His most successful novel was Of human bondage (1915). Many of his plays gained popularity including; The tenth man (1910), Our betters (1917), and The circle(1921).

Biographical Note

Bertram E. Alanson was born January 8, 1877 in San Francisco, California. He was an investment broker and served as President of the San Francisco Stock Exchange. Alanson was a personal friend of Maugham as well as his stockbroker. He collected first editions of Maugham's work and other materials about Maugham. Alanson died May 25, 1958.

William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris, France January 25, 1874. He studied medicine, but gave it up for literature. He wrote short stories, essays, and novels. He died in Nice, France December 15, 1965.
