Biographical notes:

A state Commission on Aging was originally created in 1961 as a result of studies and interest in the problems of the aged population. Its advisory committee, the interdepartmental committee on aging, was set up at the same time. In 1967, the Commission became the Division on Aging in the Department of Health and Social Services and the Council on Aging was created.

State government addressed issues related to aging in an interagency committee in 1957. Under Chapter 581, Laws of 1961, this was replaced by a Commission on Aging attached to the Governor's office. When state executive government was reorganized in 1967, the Commission's staff became the Division of Aging in the Dept. of Health and Social Services (WIHV85-A674), and the commission itself became a council advisory to the department secretary and the division administrator. In 1972, the council was replaced by an independent Board on Aging. A 1977 reorganization changed the Division of Aging to a Bureau of Aging (WIHV86-A1411) within the Division of Community Services (WIHV85-A282). In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, the above form of agency name is used for all appropriate records dated 1961-1977.

The division sought to promote conditions in which older people could enjoy relative independence and security, with special emphasis on housing, nutrition, social and service opportunities, and transportation needs.
