Somerville Manufacturing Company.
Biographical notes:
The Somerville Manufacturing Company was incorporated in New Jersey in 1837 with the power to engage in any of a number of branches of textile and metal manufacture. The object was to utilize the water power of the Raritan River at what is now Raritan, N.J., just west of Somerville. The company was able to attract the screw-making factory of Thomas William Harvey, inventor of the gimlet-headed screw, which was relocated from Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The company failed in the depression of 1839-1843 and was superseded by Harvey's New York Screw Company.
