Biographical notes:
A native of Vienna, Emanuel Winternitz (1898-1983), who had emigrated to the U.S. in 1938, was appointed to oversee the collection of musical instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art around 1942; when the musical instrument collection became an official department of the museum (in 1948 or 1949) he became the department's first curator.
