Biographical notes:

Professor Emeritus John Edward Sunder (1928-2011) was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. After serving two years in the U.S. Army in Korea, he joined the history faculty at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin in 1956. During his 37-year career as a professor of Western History at UT, Sunder authored a plethora of journal articles, book reviews, and three books on the Missouri River fur trade. Sunder’s interests also included Arctic and Canadian history and he taught the first course concerning Native Americans offered by the UT history department.
