Friedman was born in 1919 in Gary, IN; attended Univ. of Wisconsin; earned a BA at UCLA (1941), where he majored in Sociology and Economics and acted in 18 plays; wrote and produced documentary programs for the Armed Forces Radio Service during World War II; MA, Univ. of Southern Calif.; became instructor in acting and radio in the UCLA Theater Arts Dept.; Ph. D, Univ. of Southern Calif., 1955; acted in films, television, and plays; developed sports broadcasting training program at UCLA; with his students, produced series of documentary films on the CA prison system; conducted over 100 interviews with pioneers of entertainment in the program, Turning Point, as part of the UCLA Oral History Project; was founding curator of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences/UCLA Television Archives, which became the UCLA Film Archives; he retired in 1990.
