Heather Ross Miller was born in Albemarle, N.C. in 1939. She received an undergraduate degree from the Woman's College (UNCG) in 1961 and an M.F.A. in creative writing in 1969. She received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1968/69 and again in 1973/74. Inspired by the teaching of Randall Jarrell, Miller became an instructor in reading and writing.
