Biographical notes:

Myra Mahlow Hinman was born January 11, 1926, in Saginaw County, Michigan, the daughter of Henry and Cynthia (Mims) Mahlow. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1946 from Columbia University, and a master's degree in 1954 and a doctorate in 1959, both from the University of Florida. Hinman was an assistant professor at Memphis State University from 1959 to 1961. At the University of Kansas, she was an instructor from 1961 to 1963 and an assistant professor from 1963 to 1968 before becoming an associate professor in 1968. She began fighting for pay equity in 1973, having been discriminated against at the University in terms of salary and tenure and promotion standards, and was a member of the Kansas Commission on Civil Rights. She received a travel grant from the American Council of Learned Societies in 1966. Hinman was a member and conference speaker for the International Arthurian Society and belonged to and presented research reports at conferences of the Shakespeare Association of America. She was associate editor of the Hinman Text, Complete Works of Shakespeare; a member of the editorial board for the Computer-Assisted Composition journal; contributed articles to professional journals; and authored at least two books. She was a member of the Modern Languages Association, University of Virgina Bibliography Society, American Association of University Professors, Midwest Modern Language Association, South Atlantic Modern Language Association, United Burmese Cat Fanciers, American Shorthair Cat Association, and Phi Kappa Phi.

She married George E. Olstead in 1948; they had one son, Christopher Eric Olstead. They divorced in 1967. She married Charlton Hinman in 1968. She died February 11, 1992 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Her body was donated for medical research.
