Writer. David Manning Foster was born in the Blue Mountains to radio comedian parents and studied science at the University of Sydney, graduating in 1967 with the University Medal for Chemistry. He completed a doctorate in inorganic chemistry at the Australian National University and spent a year as a Fellow of the National Institute of Health in the United States in 1970. Foster worked as a senior research scientist at the Department of Medicine, University of Sydney, 1971-1972, before moving to writing as a full time occupation. He also worked variously as a truck driver, postal worker, labourer, prawn fisher, drummer and swimming pool manager. His novels critique contemporary Australian culture and its postcolonial and imperial foundations. Foster's other interests include tae kwon do and classical literature. Among his accolades are the Patrick White Award in 2010, Harold White Fellowship, 2008, Courier-Mail Book of the Year Award, 1999, James Joyce Foundation Suspended Sentence Award, 1996, The Age Book of the Year Award in 1974 and nine Miles Franklin Award nominations.
