Native of Bishopville (Lee County, S.C.); married, 1880, Ada Emmaline McCall (1859-1895); father of Charles McCall Spencer (b. 1881), William Henry Spencer, and Thomas Clarendon Spencer (1887-1948); son of son of Caroline Holmes Spencer (1823-1887) and merchant and long-time postmaster Charles Spencer (1821-1885), a native of Connecticut who settled in South Carolina during the 1840s.
