Biographical notes:

Benjamin Douglas Silliman (1805-1901) was a prominent Brooklyn lawyer and politician. He represented Kings County in the New York State Assembly in 1838, was U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1865 to 1866, was a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1872, and was a Republican candidate for New York State Attorney General in 1873, among other accomplishments.
