Biographical notes:

Harry James Carr was born in Rockingham, N.C. in 1878, entered the construction business in 1894 and incorporated H.J. Carr & Co. in 1909. He built mostly commercial buildings, but he did build several private homes including one for Henry Heinz on Ponce de Leon Ave. and a home for Asa Candler, Jr. on Lullwater Parkway, both in Atlanta. Mr. Carr built his family home on Houston Mill Road, where he and his wife, Bonnie Tate Carr, raised three children. The family home which is now owned by Emory University is called Houston Mill House and is used as an entertainment facility and restaurant. Mr. Carr was active in the Shriners, Scottish Rite, Malta Lodge #641 F & AM and the Jesters. He died in 1958 but the enduring quality of his work can still be seen in his buildings, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
