Dates:
Active 1994

Biographical notes:

The United Way of Metropolitan Chicago was founded as the Community Fund of Chicago in June 1934. The organization sought to "raise and distribute money in an efficient and equitable manner to agencies helping people in need." In the early 1930's, emergency relief was one of the Community Fund's primary focuses. Over the next thirty years, the Community Fund of Chicago continued to grow and expand its focus. In 1977, the Council for Community Services and the Community Fund merged to become the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago.
