Biographical notes:

Arthur Douglass Hirschfelder, B.S. (1897) University of California, M.D. (1903) Johns Hopkins University. Professor of pharmacology at the University of Minnesota (1913-1942). Known for his studies of local anesthesia.

Arthur Hirschfelder was born on September 29, 1879. He received his B.S. in zoology from the University of California in 1897. He studied at the Pasteur Institute in France (1898-1899) and Heidelberg University in Germany (1899) before completing his M.D. at Johns Hopkins University in 1903. He held the positions of assistant in medicine at Sooper Medical College from 1904-1905, and instructor and associate in medicine at Johns Hopkins University from 1905-1913, at which point he was named a professor of pharmacology at the University of Minnesota. Hirschfelder was well known for studies on local anesthesia and treatment of heart ailments. He remained at the University until 1942, leaving because of illness. He died on October 11, 1942 at the age of 63.
