Biographical Note: Philip D. Curtin is a historian and author.
He was born in Philadelphia in 1922, graduated from Swarthmore in 1948, and completed his graduate studies at Harvard University where he received the Ph. D. in 1953. Dr. Curtin taught at Swarthmore, 1953-1956. In 1956, he received an appointment to the history department, University of Wisconsin, where he pursued his special interests in the fields of African and Caribbean history and worked to develop programs in African Studies. Dr. Curtin is the author of several articles and texts describing the history of Africa including "The Image of Africa" for which he won the Schuyler Prize in 1966. Philip D. Curtin joined the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University in 1975 where he holds the Herbert Baxter Adams Chair in the history department.
