Queen Margaret Hall (student hall of residence : 1894- : University of Glasgow, Scotland)

Queen Margaret Hall , Bute Gardens, was established in 1894 by the Queen Margaret College Students' Union Association and was transferred to the University in 1924 . A house at No 1 Lilybank Terrace, which was given to the University by Mr J M Robertson and opened as a hall of residence in 1926, subsequently became an annexe to Queen Margaret Hall. In 1946 Galloway House and Melville House, both in Bute Gardens, were opened as additional annexes to the Hall.

By 1952 there was accommodation for 90 female students in both the Hall and the annexes. Accommodation comprised of single or shared study-bedrooms, and there were common rooms in all houses. Meals were taken in the central dining hall and all students had full use of the library and the hall grounds. The Hall was under the control of a Hostels' Committee appointed by the University Court, and was in the charge of a resident warden. Each of the annexes was in the care of a resident House-tutor. The domestic arrangements were supervised by the Domestic Bursar and an assistant. A students' house committee was elected annually and largely controlled the social activities of the Hall.

Preference was given to students entering university for the first time and they were eligible to stay for 3 years. A new Queen Margaret Hall was constructed between 1964 and 1967 at Bellshaugh Road, Kirklee, Glasgow. This was a mixed hall of residence for 157 men and 180 women. Men and women lived in separate blocks, in single study-bedrooms, and shared common dining and social facilities. Breakfast and evening meals were provided and all meals at the weekend. The Warden was helped by 14 resident members of the academic staff of the University, two of whom acted as deputy wardens, and there was an active Junior Common Room Committee running its own shop, services and recreational facilities.

A new self-catering residence opened in October 2002 . The residence contains 400 ensuite study bedrooms (five per flat) in self-contained flats. Each room has its own toilet/shower and access to a kitchen/dining area within the flat. Each bedroom is fitted with a separate data and telephone point. Common facilities on site include a lounge, laundry, security office, bike sheds and limited unallocated parking.
