Miller, George W., 1930-

George W. Miller, Democrat of Durham County, served as a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1971 to 2000. He was born in Spencer, N.C., on 14 May 1930; served in the United States Marine Corps, 1951-1953; and graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1957. He was first elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1971 and served continuously until 2000. During his tenure, Miller served as chair of several committees, including Highway Safety, Insurance, Utilities, Judiciary, and Finance. He was the author or primary sponsor of legislation such as the child restraint seat law, a law allowing motorists to turn right at a red light, a law that raised the state's minimum drinking age to 21, and a law to promote organ donation. In addition, Miller introduced legislation to restructure the Utility Commission, and he handled legislation authorizing North Carolina to enter the Southeast Interstate Low-level Radioactive Waste Management Compact. Miller has also served on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Visitors and received numerous awards and designations, including the 1994 Alumni of the Year award given by the University of North Carolina School of Law and the Tar Heel of the Week award given by the Raleigh News and Observer . Miller and his wife, Eula (Hux) Miller had three children: Anne, Rose, and George W. III.
