Biographical notes:

Originally founded as Comanche County Historical Society in 1954; museum first opened to the public on Ft. Sill, 1956, scope broadened to include Great Plains in 1960 and moved to present building in Lawton, Okla., on city park land; parent organization renamed Great Plains Historical Association; in 1970 name changed to Institute of the Great Plains; in 1973 museum came under direction of City of Lawton, Parks and Recreation Dept.; when addition to the museum opened 1998, city dropped out and non-profit organization formed (Museum of the Great Plains Trust Authority) to oversee museum operations.
