Biographical notes:

The Society of Maryland Guardsmen was formed in 1907 as an un-incorporated association of the officers of the Maryland National Guard. Apparently formed to lobby for a new militia law, which was promulgated in 1908, the society was inactive from 1909 to 1915, when it became defunct.

In accordance with the Laws of 1868, ch. 414, all persons liable to militia duty were required to either join the Maryland National Guard as a volunteer or pay to the state an annual fee of two dollars.
