Jesuit and social reformer.
Born in Tampa in 1905, Twomey entered the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus in 1926 and was ordained in 1939. In 1947 he founded the Institute of Human Industrial Relations (in 1964 renamed the Institute of Human Relations) at Loyola University of New Orleans and served as its director until his death in 1969. A leader among Jesuits in the social apostolate, he participated in varied efforts at social reform, especially in issues concerning African Americans and labor.
