Biographical notes:

Fleming earned a B. S. Ed. in Mathematics (1960) from Northwest Missouri State University and both a M. S. (1962) and a Ph. D. (1965) in Mathematics from Florida State University (FSU). He worked as an Instructor, 1962-1965, and an Assistant Professor, in the summer of 1965, at FSU; as an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, 1965-September 1971; and as an Associate Professor, September 1971-September 1980, and as a Professor of Mathematics, September 1980-August 1982, at Memphis State University. In August of 1982 Fleming was hired by Central Michigan University (CMU) as a Professor and Chair (1982-August 1997) of the Department of Mathematics. He had approximately 40 publications, and numerous lectures and presentations to his credit. A copy of his book, Isometries on Banach spaces : function spaces (c2003) is available in the Park Library. He was a well and fondly respected teacher and colleague. Fleming was the recipient of fifteen research grants and contracts. He also served on various committees and advisory boards, and was an active member of several professional mathematical associations. In 2002 Fleming was awarded CMU's College of Science and Technology's Outstanding Award. He retired from CMU in 2007. (This information is from the collection.)
