He and wife JoAnne Adams Langum had two children, Virginia and John. Virginia recently graduated from Trinity College in Dublin Ireland. In 1996 he married Francis Short Langum. They have two children, David, Jr. and Audrey. Langum's father was John K. Langum, a noted economist, married to Virginia de Mattos descended from Antonio de Mattos from Madeira.

Legal Historian and Professor of Law at Samford University, Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama, past professor of law at Nevada School of Law, Reno, Detroit College of Law, Lincoln University School of Law at San Francisco and San Jose, and San Francisco Law School, current president of the ACLU of Alabama, and author of six books, numerous journal articles and chapters in books. He has an A.B. in History from Dartmouth and an M.A. from San Jose State. His J.D. is from Stanford. His LL. D. and S.J.D. from University of Michigan. His writing is a demonstration of his interest in both history and the law. He has won several awards for his scholarship in these two areas. Langum's father was John K. Langum, a noted economist. He is also a descendant of Antonio de Mattos who settled in Jacksonville, Ill. from Madeira Island.
