Biographical notes:

Social service agency concerned primarily with child and family welfare. Created by 1953 merger of several predecessor organizations, including Children's Service League (established in 1863 as Home for the Friendless), Family Welfare Association (established in 1898 as Associated Charities of Springfield), and Springfield Day Nursery. Colored Children's Service Bureau (established in 1898 as Lincoln Colored Home) joined merger in 1959. Name changed in 1974 from Child and Family Service of Sangamon County to Family Service Center of Sangamon County.
