Biographical notes:
Edward Monroe Brown sailed in 1849 from Providence, Rhode Island,to San Francisco via Cape Horn. He worked in the crew during the voyage and teamed up with shipmates to travel to the gold diggings. He mined along the Mokelumne River working with various companies and at different sites from 1850 to 1851. In July 1851, he decided to leave Middle Bar, where he worked the longest, and set off for the southern mines.
