American poet and novelist Stephen Dobyns was born February 19, 1941, in Orange, New Jersey.
Dobyns received a B.A. from Wayne State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1967.
Stephen Dobyns's book of poetry, Concurring Beasts was a Lamont Poetry Selection for 1971 and his collection of poems, Black Dog, Red Dog, was the 1984 National Poetry Series winner.
As a novelist Dobyns is best known for his "Saratoga" series, a group of crime novels set in Saratoga Springs, New York, featuring detective Charlie Bradshaw and plots centering around corruption in the horse racing industry.
