William Hazlitt (1778-1830), essayist, was born at Maidstone, Kent, on 10 April 1778. He was educated at the Unitarian college at Hackney, but abandoned his plans to join the ministry around 1797. He gave lectures, some of which were published, wrote for the Edinburgh review, London magazine and other publications, and published works on the stage, poetry, literature and history. He died at Frith Street, London, on 18 September 1830.
