A native of Charles Town, Jefferson County, Va. (now W. Va.), William Price Craighill was educated locally and at the United States Military Academy. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for many years, rising to the rank of brigadier general. He compiled the "Army Officer's Pocket Companion" in 1861 and also served for a time as an assistant professor of Civil Engineering at West Point.
