Biographical notes:

A women's society dedicated to promote cultural understanding, social consciousness, social service, and social events; founded by fourteen women in 1929, it was originally called the Lyceum. In 1939 the Lyceum merged with the Tennis de Señoritas, another women's organization, and it became known as the Lyceum Lawn and Tennis Club. The Lyceum Lawn and Tennis Club sponsored lectures and conferences, recitals, art and photograph exhibitions, and a variety of classes in literacy and vocational training. It also founded the first free public library and the first children's library in Cuba and developed the School of Social Service of the University of Havana. The club was closed on March 16, 1968.
