Sutton family

Biographical notes:

George D. Sutton came to the Spokane Valley from Iowa to homestead and eventually set up a nursery in Spokane. With him came his wife, Rosetta Lunt Sutton (1839-1899) who was a poet and writer. Among his children were June Louisa Sutton Chaplin, who became a teacher, and Maude Sutton (1865?-1951), who studied art in New York City, was a social worker in Chicago, and became head of the art Department of Spokane University in 1913. While the other family members eventually left Spokane, Maude Sutton remained and joined the faculty of Spokane Junior College in 1932. She maintained an art studio in Spokane for many years.
