Biographical notes:

German immigrant to the United States, resided at 880 Fifth Avenue, New York, and assembled one of the largest collections of children's books in the world, built entirely after World War II. One of the major collections he acquired was that of F.R. Bussell's English children's books from the seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. The Morgan Library borrowed some 100 books from Oppenheimer for its exhibition of early children's books in 1954. After Oppenheimer's death, portions of his collection were sold at Sotheby's in 1974-1977, 1981, and 1982, at least the final sales having been arranged by Pierre Berès.
