Pinckney was governor of South Carolina (1780-1792; 1796-1798; 1806-1808) and served as a U.S. Senator (1798-1801) and U.S. Representative (1819-1821). He was a member of the U.S. Constitutional Convention and served as the U.S. Minister to Spain (1802-1804).

Governor of South Carolina, Senator, minister to Spain. Although he played a large part in the writing and promotion of the U.S. constitution, Pinckney became a leader of the Republican party. His support for Thomas Jefferson's presidential campaign alienated him from many relatives, including his cousin Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, the Federalist vice-presidential candidate.
