Target Corporation
Variant namesHistory notes:
Developed by businessman Marshall Field out of various partnerships that operated dry goods stores in the 1850s-1870s, the store adopted the name Marshall Field & Company in January 1881. In 1982, Field's was acquired by BATUS (British-American Tobacco U.S.). In 1992, Field's was acquired by Dayton Hudson Corporation. Dayton Hudson became Target Corporation in 2000. Target sold Field's to May Department Stores in 2004, which merged with Federated Department Stores, the operator of Macy's department stores. On Sept. 9, 2006, Field's was renamed Macy's. On June 1, 2007, Federated Department Stores became Macy's, Inc.
