Gamma 1911 Medical Club (medical student society : 1911-1915 : Glasgow, Scotland)

Biographical notes:

The Gamma 1911 Medical Club was formed in October 1911 by students of the University of Glasgow , Scotland, who commenced their medical studies in that year. The purpose of the Club was to promote social unity among the members of the year. Any medical student who commenced their studies in 1911 were eligible to become a member of the Club, this included the female students and also professors and lecturers within the Faculty of Medicine upon payment of a subscription of 1 shilling 6 pence. Part of the Club's constitution was to hold at least one social function in each session.

The Gamma 1911 Medical Club was administered by a standing committee of a president, 2 vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer and 6 ordinary members, 2 of which were to be women. The committee was elected at the annual general meeting to be held in the winter session. An honorary president and 4 honorary vice-presidents were also elected. A sports committee and dance committee, each consisting of 3 members, were also formed. The Club discovered though that it did not have enough female members to hold a successful dance, therefore certain social events were combined with the Beta Club, the medical club of the year above. The two clubs also formed a joint committee. It appears that the Gamma 1911 Medical Club ceased in 1915 .

In 1926 a similar Club was formed, The Gamma (Medical) Club 1926. This Club although active during the student years of its members lost some of its impetus after they graduated. The Club held a reunion in 1947 which was hailed as a great success, despite this the Club was wound up and its funds were presented to the University Library to purchase medical books.
