The Maryland Bicentennial Commission was established in 1968 (Chapter 458, Acts of 1968). The commission developed and coordinated plans for the bicentennial commemoration of the American Revolution in 1976, assisting state agencies, counties, municipalities, colleges, and schools. The commission endorsed or recognized bicentennial projects of communities and campuses, and civic, fraternal, patriotic, religious, educational, and youth organizations which highlighted events preceding and during the American Revolutionary era. The projects included publication of a newsletter, bicentennial trail map, books, films, and magazine articles, and bicentennial ceremonies and exhibits.
The Maryland Bicentennial Commission consisted of twenty-one members appointed by the governor for terms of five years each. It became inactive in June 1978, but continued temporarily at the governor's pleasure.
