Harriet Cruttenden was born in Inkster, North Dakota, in 1916, the daughter of Coran and Muriel Cruttenden. The family moved to Helena, Montana, in 1929. Harriett graduated from Helena High School and Jamestown College. In 1941 she married Peter Meloy. She began working at the Montana Historical Society in 1957 as a volunteer, and eventually became the head of the Library. She retired in 1977. Throughout her life she was active in educational and civic activities. She was honored in 2002 with the Governor's Humanities Award for her lifetime of contributions. Harriett Meloy died April 29, 2006.
