Garrison was a private in the 161st New York Infantry. The regiment was organized in 1862. Garrison spent the duration of his service in Louisiana.

Abraham Garrison was a private in Company A of the 161st New York Infantry Regiment. The unit participated in General Nathaniel Banks's Louisiana Expedition, the focus of which was the capture of Port Hudson. Garrison died of typhoid-dysentery on September 17, 1863, and is buried in the Baton Rouge National Cemetery.
