Art historian, professor, author: born Hendrik Roelof Rookmaaker, February 27, 1922; joined Dutch Royal Navy, served as a midshipman in World War II, captured by the Nazis and imprisoned for distributing papers for the Dutch underground; while in prison, converted to the Christian faith; married Anky Huitker, 1949; taught history and art history at Leiden High School, 1952-1958; earned his doctorate in art history at the University of Amsterdam in 1959: wrote thesis, Synthetist Art Theories : Genesis and Nature of the Ideas on Art of Gauguin and His Circle; worked as assistant professor of History of Art at the University of Leiden, 1958-1965; appointed to Art History chair at Vrije (Free) University, 1965-1977; authored many works on topics of art theory, art history and music including, Jazz, Blues and Spirituals, published in 1960 and Modern Art and the Death of Culture, published in 1970; died March 13, 1977.
