Herman F. Becker (1907-1985) was a paleobotanist employed by the New York Botanical Garden from 1958-1974. He was Curator of Paleobotany from 1965-1974. His specialty is the Tertiary paleobotany of southwest Montana. He was born in Dusseldorf, Germany and emigrated to the United States. He studied horticulture at the Berlin Botanical Garden. In the United States he attended Brooklyn College (1939-1947) and earned his MA in Botany from Columbia University in 1952 and his Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of Michigan where he studied paleobotany under Chester Arnold. Previous to his work at the New York Botanical Garden he was Superintendent of the Conservatory at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
