Biographical notes:

Andrew Alm Benson was born 24 September 1917 in Modesto, California. He received his B.S. in 1939 from the University of California (Berkeley) and his Ph.D. in 1942 from the California Institute of Technology. He served as instructor of chemistry at the University of California and as a research chemist at Stanford University before his appointment to the radiation laboratory staff. In 1951, he went to Norway as a Fulbright lecturer at the Agricultural College of Norway. He published more than 40 papers on his research work. In addition to contributions to biochemistry, his research is considered an outstanding demonstration of the use of radioactive isotopes. On 1 January 1955, Andrew A. Benson joined Pennsylvania State University and served as a professor of agricultural and biological chemistry for seven years before resigning that position to join the staff of the Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine at the University of California Medical School in Los Angeles.
