Baxter D. Whitney Co., Winchendon, Mass.; designer and builder of machines for the woodworking industry as well as looms for a family woolen mill; established 1837 by Baxter D. Whitney; later went into partnership with his son, William M. Whitney and ca. 1910-1915 firm renamed Baxter D. Whitney & Son, Inc.; in 1955 company sold to Newman Machine Company, Greensboro, N.C. and was subsequently reorganized as Newman/Whitney. The Whitney machines were displayed at the 1867 Paris Exposition and again in Vienna in 1873. where many prizes and awards were won. By the end of the 19th century Whitney machines were being shipped throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
