Biographical notes:

Clara Forrester Ashmead, daughter of Dr. Alexander Forrester, was the wife of Rev. William Ashmead (1798-1829), a Presbyterian minister of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Suffering from tuberculosis, Rev. Ashmead went south in the winter of 1828-1829. He was installed as the pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston, South Carolina on May 17, 1829, but on returning to Philadelphia with his family he became ill and died on December 2, 1829. The Ashmeads were close friends with members of the Adger family of Charleston.
