Biographical notes:

Furnifold Rhem, Sr. (1820-1888), founder of the F. Rhem Co., was a native of Craven County, N.C., who later moved to Williamsburg/Georgetown Counties, S.C. He and his wife Laura A. Cook had two sons, Durward Dudley (1862-1922) and Furnifold, Jr. (1864-1918). F. Rhem and Sons Company expanded to include the production and sale of cotton, naval stores, turpentine, the Black River and Mingo Steamboat Company, Rhem Real Estate Company, Rhem Dock and Terminal Company, Rhem Timber and Land Company, and Rhem Shingle Company. Charles Flint Rhem, Durwood's son, was a professional baseball player.
