Hardie was born on Dec. 15, 1875 in London, England; attended Linton House, St. Paul's School, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1898; began work in the library of the Victoria and Albert Museum; studied etching with Sir Frank Short of the Royal College of Art, exhibiting his own etchings and water colors at the Royal Academy by 1908; elected to Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; in 1921 he took charge of the Museum's new Dept. of Engraving, Illustration, and Design which, by his retirement in 1935, had become one of the world's most significant collections of drawings and prints; wrote many books, including English coloured books (1906), The British school of etching (1921), and a three-volume history of British water color painting; died on Jan. 20, 1952 in Tonbridge, England.
