Biographical notes:
W.A. Sutherland was a graduate of New Mexico State University in 1898. June 25, 1902, he married Minnie Newberry, a 1901 graduate of NMSU. They had two children, William Alexander, Jr. born 1906 and Constance born 1912. Sutherland was a professor of Spanish and Latin at the college, and in 1902 he was sent to the Philippines as an assistant to William Howard Taft. He instituted the Pensionado Program which brought Filipino students to the United States. He became a lawyer and lived and worked in Las Cruces, New Mexico for many years. He was an avid Aggie fan and a dedicated supporter of New Mexico State University.
